Cloth Diaper Shell Materials

  1. Before washing, make sure any solid matter is removed from your product. For items with heavy soiling that may stain or develop odors, rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear before storing for wash day.
  2. For a deep clean, start with a pre-wash on a short cycle using warm water (up to 140°F / 60°C) and the recommended amount of detergent, such as Tide Original to Line 1. Follow with a heavy-duty, longest-cycle wash in warm or cold water, again using the appropriate detergent amount. To ensure proper agitation, add other items to create a full load.
  3. For everyday or lighter messes or items already pre-rinsed, a regular cycle in cold or warm water (up to 140°F / 60°C) with the normal amount of detergent is sufficient.
  4. Whenever possible, hang to dry. If you’re in a rush, you can tumble dry on low.

Waterproof Protection Built In

PUL outer shell keeps leaks contained, no matter which insert you pair it with. Day use, heavy wetters, on the go...it holds.

Adjustable, One-Size Fit

Fits from 7–35 lbs with guide snaps so you always get a secure, comfortable fit; no guesswork, no leaks at the legs

No Prep & Easy to Wash

Ready straight out of the package. Machine wash, hang or tumble dry low, and it's good to go again. Simple as that.

The Shell That Does the Heavy Lifting

Every feature on this cover exists for a reason. Waterproof PUL keeps leaks where they belong. Guide snaps take the guesswork out of fit. The belly band stops front leaks for boys and belly sleepers. And one-size adjustability means it grows with your baby from 7 to 35 lbs; from newborn all the way to potty training. No inserts included, just a seriously well-built cover ready for whatever you snap into it.

Cloth Diaper Shell Features

Foolproof Fit, Fuss-Free Care

There's no stuffing or prepping; just snap the inserts in, put it on, and go. When it's time to wash, rinse solids, toss it in the machine, and either hang or tumble dry. Easy on you, gentle on your kiddo, kind to the planet.

How Many Cloth Diaper Shells Do You Really Need?

The shell is only half the system, so here's how to think about building your stash. Since you can reuse each cover for at least 2 changes before it needs washing, swapping only the insert in between, you need fewer shells than you might expect. For most families washing every 2–3 days, 4-6 shells covers a full day of changes with room to breathe. Going full-time? Aim for 12–18 shells. Just dipping your toes in? 4–6 is a great place to start.

What Goes Inside the Cloth Diaper Shell?

As for what goes inside, this shell works with all of our inserts. The Tank Insert Set is what most families reach for first: it has a stay-dry charcoal top, bamboo absorbency, and a PUL backing that lets you reuse the shell mid-day without a full change. The Bamboo and Charcoal Inserts are great everyday options, and the Overnight Insert Set (8 layers deep) is the one to grab for heavy wetters or long stretches between changes. Any insert snaps right in, no stuffing, no fuss; you can check them out here.

No, this is the shell only. You'll need to add inserts separately. The good news? That means you can choose exactly the absorbency that works for your baby and your routine. We recommend the Tank Insert Set as your starting point. You can check out all insert options here.

Yes; all of our inserts (Tank, Bamboo, Charcoal, and Overnight) snap directly into this shell. No stuffing, no folding, no fuss. Just snap in and go.

One shell does it all. With adjustable rise and waist snaps plus two guide snaps to take the guesswork out of fit, this cover fits babies from 7 to 35 lbs; from the newborn stage right through to potty training.

Nope, no prepping required. We do recommend a quick warm wash with half your usual detergent amount before first use, just to rinse off any warehouse dust. Then it's ready to go.

Yes, it's safe. Our shells are Oeko-Tex and CPSIA certified and tested free of BPA, parabens, formaldehyde, lead, and phthalates. The outer PUL layer is also breathable, so your baby stays comfortable while staying leak-free.

Yes, and that's actually the point. Since the Tank Insert Set has a PUL-backed large insert, the shell itself stays clean between changes. Swap the inserts, give the shell a quick check, and reuse. It's what makes cloth diapering so much more affordable than it looks.

Best cloth diaper

I used all pocket diapers with my first 3 kids and they were starting to wear out. I upgraded to the lil helpers with my 4th baby and I wish I had them from the beginning. My 4th baby is almost 2 now and these diapers are still in amazing condition. They hold up so well and are so much easier to use than the pocket diapers. The snaps are absolutely genius.

It's always 5 stars, maaan.

I just keep coming back. It all started a few years ago when my sister gifted us a life saver blanket. Skip to today where we are cloth diapering our new baby (with the best reusable diapers around, believe me, we looked) and now I am talking a family member who is struggling with incontinence to get a system from Lil Helpers as well. We are purchased countless lifesaver blankets (we are even using them as mattress protectors in the winter!), waterproof bags, smocks, reusable diapers (the heavy duty inserts are magic!), and more.
Excellent materials, patterns are super cute, products are always functional.

Hey hey Kate!! Wowza!! Thank you for your amazing review and for being such a loyal customer. We appreciate you sharing your experience with so many of our products! It is the best news that our Tank Cloth Diapers, Lifesaver Mats, Smockets, and waterproof bags have been so helpful to you and your family. Thank you big time for recommending us to your family member; if they have any questions about our incontinence products, we are always here to help and can be reached at delight@lilhelper.ca. We hope that you have an amazing day! - Amanda @ Lil Helper

Blown away by no blowouts!

We started using these with my daughter when she was still in standard newborn size diapers. We are now several months in and we LOVE these diapers. Cleaning them is easy, I love the colorful prints, and the tank inserts are quite simply TANKS. We’ve had maybe one leak and that let us know it was time to size up the rise - and no problems since. My friends’ babies are constantly having blowouts but we have entirely escaped that so far. My daughter will sometimes hold poop for several days but the elastic at the waist and legs still manages to hold it in when the “poopocalypse” hits. Although we were gifted many disposable diapers at our shower, we’ve only used a handful of each size because we lil helpers so much. A dry bag for dirty diapers makes it easy to use these when out of the house, and a little sprayer on our toilet makes poop removal a breeze. These were an investment but I am so glad we took the plunge.

Hey Rachael! My goodness, we are blown away by the kindness and thoroughness of your review of your Tank Cloth Diaper!! It is the very best news to read that you find them to be easy for your daughter to wear, easy for you to clean, and able to hold all of the pee and poo! It's so true: Poopocalypses, Poopnamis, Poopnados don't stand a chance in our Tank Cloth Diapers! (And now I'm on a kick to find more natural disaster poop puns :) ) We hope that they continue to serve you well and that you and your daughter have a fantastic week! Thank you for choosing Lil Helper! - Amanda @ Lil Helper

Love these diapers!

We love lil helper! These diapers have been great for my daughter, as she has sensitive skin and the minute a disposable diaper touches her she gets a rash. These diapers have held up great to many washes, and ultimately they’ll be way more cost effective than disposables.

My only complaint is that my daughter tended to leak through these when we were just using the small inserts (up until she was 12lbs, which I think is the recommended size for starting to use the large ones). She is a very well hydrated baby so I think they just couldn’t handle the volume of liquid, as nothing was wrong with the diaper absorbance. Customer support was super helpful though and provided some suggestions like adding in cloth wipes under the insert for additional absorbance. This helped about 75% of the time but we still did get SOME leaks. But now that we’re using both inserts, we have had NO issues and it’s been great. Even with the leaking I’d recommend these (just maybe not for an under 8 week old who is very hydrated!).

My ask for lil helper is maybe to offer an option to purchase a SMALL bamboo liner addition with the PUL backing for newborn sizing. I think we could have made the bulk work but the length of the large insert was just too much to fit before she was about 12 lbs. just something to think about!

Hi Hannah!! Thank you so very much for taking the time to leave a 5 star review of your Tank Cloth Diaper. Our Delight Team loved chatting with you to provide those suggestions to help bulk up for absorbency. We are always here along the way to troubleshoot fit and leaks and can be reached at delight@lilhelper.ca (just in case any other questions pop up!) :) Also- did you know that we have a parenting group on FB called 'Lil Helper Unsnapped: Parenting Tips & Advice'? We would love to have you join if you haven't already!! Thank you also for your feedback of having an option to purchase a small bamboo liner. We will pass this along to our production team! We appreciate you being a loyal customer and hope that you have a wonderful, wonderful Mother's Day weekend! - Amanda @ Lil Helper
