Menstrual Hygiene Day: What is Free Bleeding?

Menstrual Hygiene Day is May 28th, and ICYMI Lil Helper is working hard to bring you the best in reusable period products!

Our reusable Hyps Menstrual Pads have gone viral on Tik Tok, so much so that we released new prints and a brand new size for heavy flows and overnight use thanks to your feedback!

Of course, at Lil Helper we offer more than just single products, however, and you can find entire period systems on our site. This includes wetbags for storing your cloth pads and mesh bags for wash day.

But did you know that our Lifesaver Mats are also perfect for free bleeding and offering extra overnight mattress protection when you are on your period? So we wanted to take this chance with Menstrual Hygiene Day in mind to share with you all about free bleeding!

What is Free Bleeding?

Basically, free bleeding means to menstruate without using tampons, pads, or other products to catch or absorb your period. Some people may choose to free bleed to normalize periods, or because the cost of disposable period products is so high. Or maybe you’ve experienced a tampon shortage.

Why you should try Free Bleeding?

There are billions of pads and tampons used every year in North America that simply end up in landfills. By free bleeding you can reduce your waste, and normalize your period. Whether it is simply around your home for yourself, or as part of a larger campaign, free bleeding can help normalize periods for the natural process they are. When we destigmatize bodily functions like periods, we allow for more empathy where once there was shame.

What You’ll Need

The beauty of free bleeding is that you don’t need anything at all. But if you are worried about your mattress or couch getting messy, we understand. Many free bleeders even bring towels out in public to sit on. But as you may know from the other adult uses of our Lifesaver Mats, we don’t recommend that.

Towels will eventually become saturated and when that happens your flow can transfer to whatever is beneath the towel. Our Lifesaver Mats feature a waterproof layer in addition to the absorbent side, so they won’t leak through to what’s underneath. A great addition to your menstrual hygiene routine whether you free bleed or not.
